VTCT vs CPD: Which Beauty Qualification Do You Need?
The difference between beauty qualifications, explained simply
Short answer: A VTCT qualification is a nationally regulated qualification, ideal if you are starting a beauty career from scratch. A CPD course is shorter, focused training in one treatment, ideal for adding a new skill once you have a foundation. Many therapists start with VTCT and then build up with CPD courses.
What is a VTCT qualification?
VTCT is an awarding organisation regulated by Ofqual. Its qualifications sit on the national framework at set levels, such as a Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy or a Level 4 Certificate in Laser and IPL. They involve set learning hours, practical assessments and portfolio work, and are recognised by employers, insurers and colleges across the UK.
Best for: starting a career, working in salons and spas, or progressing to higher levels.
What is a CPD course?
CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. A CPD accredited course has been checked by an independent CPD body to confirm it meets learning standards. CPD courses are usually shorter and focus on one treatment, such as lash extensions, chemical peels or waxing.
Best for: qualified therapists adding a treatment, career changers who want to start with one service, or anyone keeping their skills current.
VTCT vs CPD at a glance
| VTCT qualification | CPD course | |

| Covers | A broad range of treatments and theory | One specific treatment |
| Ideal for | Starting a career, employment | Adding a skill, specialising |
Will I be able to get insured?
Insurers generally accept both, but each insurer sets its own list of accepted courses. Always check with your insurer before you book any course.
Which should you choose?
If you are new to beauty and want a long-term career, a VTCT qualification gives you the broadest foundation. If you already have a qualification, or want to start with one treatment and grow from there, a CPD course gets you earning sooner.
