Laser Core of Knowledge: What It Is and Who Needs It

The laser safety foundation every UK laser and IPL user needs

Short answer: The Laser Core of Knowledge is a foundation safety course for anyone who uses, supervises or works near a laser or IPL machine. It covers how lasers work, the hazards, eye protection and controlled areas, and most insurers and clinics expect you to hold it before you treat clients.

What is the Core of Knowledge?

The Core of Knowledge is the basic safety knowledge every laser and IPL user in the UK should have. It is not a hands-on treatment course. Instead, it gives you the theory that sits underneath every laser treatment, whether that is hair removal, skin rejuvenation or tattoo removal.

Who needs it?

  • Beauty therapists starting laser or IPL training
  • Clinic owners and managers who have a laser on site
  • Staff who work in or near the treatment room
  • Anyone acting as a Laser Protection Supervisor in their clinic

Many practitioners also refresh it regularly to keep their knowledge and insurance up to date.

What does it cover?

  • Laser and IPL physics: how light is produced and how lasers differ from IPL
  • Light and tissue: how energy is absorbed by melanin, water and blood, and why that matters for skin type
  • Hazards: eye injury, skin burns, fire, electrical risk and laser plume
  • Risk management: controlled areas, protective eyewear, local rules and the role of the Laser Protection Adviser

Why it matters

Laser hair removal machines are Class 4 devices. A stray or reflected beam can cause permanent eye damage in a fraction of a second, often without pain. Understanding why the door is locked, why mirrors are covered and why everyone wears wavelength-specific eyewear is what keeps you, your clients and your colleagues safe.

Core of Knowledge vs a laser treatment course

The Core of Knowledge teaches safety. A laser treatment course, such as our CPD Laser Hair Removal course, teaches you to consult, assess skin, choose settings and treat clients hands-on. Most people need both: the Core of Knowledge first, then practical treatment training.

Take the course online

Our Laser Core of Knowledge: UK Standards course is fully online, written in line with British Medical Laser Association guidance, and costs £29. You can watch a free preview before you enrol and start straight away.
