B12 Injection Training: Who Can Give B12 Injections in the UK?
The legal position, the prescriber's role and the training you need
Short answer: Vitamin B12 injections are prescription-only medicines in the UK. Each client needs a consultation with a qualified prescriber, who decides whether B12 is suitable and issues a prescription. A trained practitioner can then administer the injection that has been prescribed for that client. Practitioners cannot prescribe B12 or buy it to inject clients without a prescription.
B12 injections are a popular wellness add-on in aesthetics clinics, but they are also one of the most misunderstood treatments legally. Here is how to offer them properly.
Is B12 a prescription-only medicine?
Yes. The MHRA has confirmed that hydroxocobalamin B12 injections are classified as prescription-only medicines. Supplying or administering them without a prescription breaches the Human Medicines Regulations 2012, and councils have issued warnings about illegal B12 injection services.
How to offer B12 injections legally
- Prescriber consultation. The client sees a qualified prescriber, such as a doctor, nurse prescriber or pharmacist prescriber, who reviews their medical history and suitability.
- Prescription. If suitable, the prescriber issues a prescription in the client's name, dispensed by a pharmacy.
- Administration. A trained practitioner administers the prescribed injection using safe intramuscular technique, then records the treatment.
Clients should expect to see a pharmacy dispensing label with their name on the product.
What does B12 injection training cover?
- The role of vitamin B12 in energy, red blood cell formation and the nervous system
- Signs and symptoms of deficiency
- Legal and prescribing requirements in the UK
- Anatomy of injection sites and intramuscular technique
- Infection control, sharps safety and managing adverse reactions, including anaphylaxis
Who is B12 training for?
Beauty and aesthetics practitioners who want to add B12 to their treatment menu, working alongside a prescriber, and clinic staff who will administer prescribed injections.

Frequently asked questions
Can a beauty therapist give B12 injections?
A trained practitioner can administer B12 that a prescriber has prescribed for that client after a consultation. They cannot prescribe it themselves.
Can I buy B12 to inject clients?
No. B12 injections are prescription-only and must be prescribed for each client.
Do I need anaphylaxis training?
Yes. Anyone giving injections should be trained to recognise and manage anaphylaxis, and have an emergency kit available.
